Hanna Portable photometer for free and total chlorine — Field and lab water analysis

This photometer is most useful for water-treatment operators, pool technicians, and environmental users who need a portable instrument for checking chlorine or other water-quality parameters during routine testing, troubleshooting, or compliance work.

Optimized for Fast, Precise Water Analysis Across Industries

The HI97711 is a high-performance portable photometer designed for measuring free and total chlorine in water with extreme precision. Ideal for applications in swimming pools, drinking water, food processing, metal finishing, and pulp & paper industries, it allows users to monitor disinfection, oxidation, and bleaching processes with confidence. The meter detects chlorine concentrations up to 5.00 mg/L (ppm) and ensures repeatable results thanks to a superior optical system.

Users appreciate the HI97711 for its rugged, waterproof design, intuitive operation, and fast readings. Its performance stands out compared to conventional photometers, offering enhanced stability, lower maintenance, and reliability even in field conditions.

Advanced Optical System

The photometer incorporates a reference detector, narrowband interference filters, and a concave focusing lens to provide highly accurate, consistent, and repeatable measurements.

  • LED light source generates minimal heat
  • 8 nm narrowband interference filter accurate to ±1 nm with 25% higher light efficiency
  • Reference detector modulates LED voltage for stable light output
  • Concave focusing lens minimizes errors from cuvette imperfections

Stable and Efficient Light Source

The internal reference system compensates for power fluctuations and temperature changes, delivering fast, stable readings. High-efficiency LEDs provide intense illumination while using minimal power and generating negligible heat.

High-Quality Filters and Lens

Precision optical filters and a focusing lens enhance wavelength accuracy and light collection, reducing errors caused by cuvette scratches and imperfections. This ensures reliable, repeatable measurements in low-absorbance samples.

CAL Check Functionality

Hanna’s exclusive CAL Check allows users to verify meter performance using NIST-traceable standards. Standard vials simulate absorbance values to confirm accuracy before taking measurements.

Flexible Measurement Options

Users can choose between powder reagents in single-use packets or low-cost liquid reagents in dropper bottles. A built-in reaction timer ensures consistent timing across measurements, enhancing result reproducibility.

Large Cuvette and Display

The HI97711 accommodates a 25 mm path-length cuvette for improved accuracy in low-absorbance solutions. A backlit dot-matrix LCD with virtual keys provides clear readings, battery status, error messages, and context-sensitive help.

Battery and Auto-Off Protection

The meter operates on three standard AA batteries, providing approximately 800 measurements. Auto-off after 15 minutes of inactivity conserves battery life while ensuring readiness for the next test.

Step-by-Step Free Chlorine Measurement

Required Reagent: HI93701-0 Free Chlorine Reagent (1 packet)

  1. Select the Free Chlorine (Powder) method in the procedure menu.
  2. Fill the cuvette with 10 mL of unreacted sample. Replace the stopper and cap. Sample in cuvette
  3. Insert the cuvette into the holder, aligning the notch securely.
  4. Press Zero. The display shows "-0.0-" when ready.
  5. Remove the cuvette and add one packet of HI93701-0 reagent. Shake gently for 20 seconds.
  6. Reinsert the cuvette and press Read. A 1-minute countdown begins. To skip the timer, press Read twice.
  7. The meter displays chlorine concentration in mg/L (Cl2).

Technical Q&A

What is the difference between free and total chlorine?

Free chlorine refers to the portion of chlorine available for disinfection, while total chlorine includes both free chlorine and combined chlorine (chlorine bound to other compounds).

Can this photometer be used in field conditions?

Yes, the HI97711 is waterproof and compact, designed for both field and benchtop use with a rugged cuvette holder and protective gasketed battery compartment.

How often should the meter be calibrated?

Calibration should be performed as needed or before critical measurements using the provided CAL Check standards to ensure accuracy.

What are typical applications of the HI97711?

The meter is suitable for water quality monitoring in pools, drinking water, food processing, metal finishing, and pulp and paper industries.

How long do the batteries last?

Three AA batteries provide roughly 800 measurements, with an auto-off feature to conserve energy.

What makes this kind of instrument practical for daily use?

Portable operation, straightforward calibration routines, and application-specific sensors or scales help teams get faster and more repeatable results where the work is actually happening.

Who benefits most from this product?

Water-treatment operators, pool technicians, and environmental users benefit most when they need quick, defensible readings for process adjustments, troubleshooting, or documented quality checks.

Because it combines 12 months limited warrranty, No warm-up time before taking a measurement, Uses either powder or cost-saving liquid reagents, this product is a strong fit for field and lab water analysis in real operating conditions.
