Rotator-Genie Laboratory Rotators and Rockers

Flexible Benchtop Mixing by Rotation, Rocking or Multi-Motion Agitation

The Genie laboratory rotator and rocker family provides adaptable, low-speed mixing for tubes, bottles, flasks, microplates, sealed bags, blotting containers and irregularly shaped vessels. Available models range from a straightforward variable-speed rotator to programmable instruments that combine rocking and full 360-degree rotation.

These systems are suitable for life science, clinical, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemistry, food, cosmetic and environmental laboratories. Depending on the selected model and attachment, they can support sample resuspension, staining and destaining, blot washing, hybridization, reagent mixing, hematology procedures and other applications requiring controlled, continuous movement without high-speed vortexing.

The product family includes the digitally controlled Roto-Rock Genie SI-R100, the Rotator Genie SI-2200 with magnetic platform, the Rotator Genie SI-2100 with adjustable standard platform and the Roto-Shake Genie SI-1100. The models differ primarily in available motions, control system, platform design, programmable operation and sample capacity.

Available Genie Rotator and Rocker Models

Roto-Rock Genie SI-R100

The Roto-Rock Genie is a programmable laboratory rocker and rotator that combines two mixing motions in one compact instrument. Its digital touchscreen allows users to select rocking, continuous rotation or an automated sequence that alternates between the two movements.

Rocking speed, rotation speed, tilt angle and operating time can be adjusted to suit different vessels and sample conditions. The controlled rocking angle is particularly useful with open containers because it can be reduced to produce effective mixing while limiting the risk of liquid spilling over the vessel walls.

The Roto-Rock Genie is supplied with a magnetic platform and a removable non-slip rocking tray. Its magnetic surface also accepts Genie clip plates, bag-retaining strips and other compatible accessories for tubes, bottles, flasks and specialized laboratory containers.

Rotator Genie SI-2200 with Magnetic Platform

The SI-2200 Rotator Genie provides variable-speed 360-degree rotation with a magnetic platform designed for the Genie interchangeable attachment system. Magnetic clip plates and retaining accessories can be positioned at different angles to create rolling, tumbling or end-over-end sample movement.

Both sides of the platform can be loaded when adequate clearance is maintained. This arrangement expands usable capacity and makes the SI-2200 suitable for laboratories that routinely process different tube diameters, microplates, sealed bags or vessels requiring dedicated holders.

Rotator Genie SI-2100 with Standard Platform

The SI-2100 uses an adjustable thermoplastic platform with flexible retaining bands. Tubes, bottles, flasks and irregularly shaped vessels can be secured directly to the platform without requiring a separate clip plate for every container size.

The standard platform pivots through 90 degrees and locks at the selected position. Changing the angle of the vessel relative to the rotating axis allows the operator to obtain gentle rolling, tumbling or more vigorous end-over-end mixing from the same instrument.

Roto-Shake Genie SI-1100

The Roto-Shake Genie combines variable-speed rotation and rocking in one multi-purpose laboratory mixer. A mechanical adjustment changes the magnetic stainless-steel platform from complete rotation to a controlled rocking motion.

The SI-1100 is supplied with a non-skid rocking tray, magnetic bag-mounting strips and clip plates for several common tube diameters. An optional 3-D orbital attachment converts the instrument into an orbital shaker, allowing one system to perform rotation, rocking and three-dimensional orbital agitation.

Performance and Design Features

Adjustable Sample Orientation

Changing the position of a tube or vessel relative to the rotation axis changes how its contents move. Samples can be gently rolled along the vessel wall, repeatedly inverted or subjected to a combination of tumbling and end-over-end motion.

Magnetic Attachment System

The SI-R100, SI-2200 and SI-1100 use magnetic platforms that accept compatible clip plates, retaining strips, trays and vessel holders. Accessories can be repositioned or exchanged to accommodate different sample formats without permanently modifying the platform.

Standard Platform with Retaining Bands

The SI-2100 standard platform uses adjustable flexible bands to secure vessels of varying shapes and dimensions. Its pivoting design provides control over the sample angle and can be removed without tools when the platform must be exchanged.

Operation in Temperature-Controlled Areas

The instruments are designed for operation from 0 to 38°C and can be used in many cold rooms and non-CO2 incubators when adequate space, ventilation and operating clearance are available. The unit should be allowed to acclimate before an exact operating speed is selected after a change in ambient temperature.

Continuous-Duty Mixing

The Rotator Genie models use motors intended for smooth, quiet continuous operation. Samples should be distributed evenly across the platform because unbalanced loading can produce irregular motion or variations in speed.

Note: Capacities depend on the vessel dimensions, attachment configuration, operating speed and required clearance. Samples should be distributed evenly and securely retained before operation. Specifications apply to the listed 120 V models and may differ for international voltage or plug configurations.

Q&A

What is the difference between the Roto-Rock Genie and Rotator Genie?

The Roto-Rock Genie SI-R100 provides programmable rocking, complete rotation and automatic switching between both motions. The SI-2100 and SI-2200 Rotator Genie models provide variable-speed rotation but do not include a dedicated rocking mode or digital timer.

What is the difference between the SI-2100 and SI-2200 Rotator Genie?

The SI-2100 has a standard platform with adjustable retaining bands that directly secure vessels of different shapes. The SI-2200 has a magnetic platform that accepts interchangeable clip plates, bag strips and specialized magnetic holders.

What is the difference between the Roto-Rock Genie and Roto-Shake Genie?

Both instruments provide rocking and rotation. The newer SI-R100 adds a digital touchscreen, adjustable rocking angle, programmable timing and automatic rock-to-rotate sequences. The SI-1100 uses analog controls and can be converted to 3-D orbital shaking with an optional attachment.

Which Genie rotator is best for tubes of several different sizes?

The SI-2200 is a strong choice when the laboratory wants dedicated magnetic clip plates for specific tube diameters. The SI-2100 is more convenient when differently shaped vessels must be secured directly to one adjustable platform without changing clip plates.

Can the Rotator Genie perform end-over-end mixing?

Yes. Tubes or vessels can be positioned across the platform so that they are repeatedly inverted during 360-degree rotation. The exact movement depends on the vessel orientation, platform angle and speed setting.

Can the Roto-Rock Genie mix open containers?

Yes. Its removable non-slip tray is intended for rocking trays, dishes and other open vessels. The rocking angle and speed should be set low enough to produce adequate movement without spilling the sample.

Can these laboratory rotators mix sealed bags?

Yes. Magnetic bag-mounting strips can secure sealed bags on compatible magnetic platforms. This configuration is useful for uniform washing, staining and other procedures in which liquid must move repeatedly across the contents of the bag.

Can the Rotator Genie be used inside an incubator?

The compact Rotator Genie is designed to fit inside many incubators and can operate between 0 and 38°C. It should not be used in a CO2 incubator unless the manufacturer specifically approves the installation, and adequate clearance and ventilation must be maintained.

Can these instruments operate in a cold room?

Yes. The specified operating range begins at 0°C. After moving the instrument into a cold room, allow it to acclimate before selecting an exact speed because temperature changes can temporarily affect operating characteristics.

Can microplates be used on a Rotator Genie?

Microplates can be accommodated with a suitable magnetic holder, box or platform configuration. The plate must be firmly secured, evenly balanced and positioned so that it clears the instrument housing throughout the complete rotation.

How should samples be loaded on the rotating platform?

Distribute vessels evenly across the platform and confirm that every container is securely retained. Before continuous operation, begin at the lowest speed and briefly cycle the instrument to verify that the samples clear the housing and surrounding surfaces.

How should a Genie rotator or rocker be cleaned?

Disconnect the instrument from electrical power before cleaning. Wipe the housing and removable surfaces with water, mild soap or an appropriate compatible detergent using a cloth or sponge. Do not immerse the base, autoclave the instrument or allow liquid to enter its electrical components.
