Applications:

Draught Measurement in the Flue Gas Duct

Draught measurement is a differential pressure measurement between two sub-areas caused by temperature differences, generating compensating flow. In flue gas systems, this differential pressure indicates the “chimney flue draught” measured between flue gas and ambient air at the measurement orifice in the center of the flue gas flow.

Proper differential pressure ensures flue gases are safely transported through the chimney in low-pressure boiler systems. Excessive draught increases flue gas temperature, raising flue gas loss and reducing efficiency. Insufficient draught can cause oxygen deficiency, soot buildup, carbon monoxide formation, and lower efficiency.

Ambient CO Measurement in Heated Environments

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless toxic gas produced during incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. Exposure to CO prevents oxygen transport in the blood, potentially causing suffocation. Regular monitoring of CO emissions at combustion points and surrounding areas is critical for safety.

Flue Gas Parameter Measurement (CO, O2, Temperature, etc.)

Measuring flue gas parameters helps quantify pollutants and energy losses in heating systems. In some countries, flue gas measurements are legally required to minimize environmental contamination and optimize energy use. Measurements are taken at the center of flow using a Lambda probe, with values recorded for printing or PC transfer.

Measurements are conducted during commissioning by the installer, followed by checks four weeks later by a flue gas inspector or chimney sweep, and at regular intervals by authorized service engineers.

Burner Pressure Measurement (Nozzle Pressure, Gas Flow Pressure, etc.)

Service checks of domestic heating systems include measuring burner gas pressures, including flow (supplied) and resting (static) pressures. Flow pressure deviations outside 18–25 mbar require the boiler to remain inactive. Operating under incorrect pressures can cause burner malfunction, flame setting failures, and potential hazards.

Q&A

Can the testo 310 measure all types of residential fuels?

Yes, it supports natural gas, propane, fuel oil 2*, biomass 5%, and wood 20%, making it suitable for a wide range of residential and light commercial heating systems.

Is the analyzer suitable for compliance inspections?

Absolutely. The testo 310 provides accurate measurements required for legal compliance and safety inspections in many countries.

Can the results be documented and printed?

Yes, with the optional printer kit, all readings can be printed for record-keeping or transferred to a PC for analysis.

How often should CO and flue gas be measured?

Measurements should be conducted during commissioning, followed by checks after four weeks, and periodically during routine maintenance by authorized service personnel.
